    About Petaluma, California

Petaluma is located just 32 miles north of San Francisco in the gorgeous Sonoma Valley Wine Country. Its ideal location can easily serve as a base for those exploring numerous romantic wineries, lush California Redwoods, and the breathtaking Point Reyes National Seashore. Petaluma's name derives from the language of the Coast Miwok Indians and most likely refers to the Sonoma Mountain, which is within close proximity to Petaluma.

The bucolic town of Petaluma has a quaint "Americana" visual appeal, and Petaluma's historic downtown streets, shops, and homes has attracted Hollywood filmmakers for more than 50 year, and films that were shot in Petaluma include American Graffiti and Peggy Sue Got Married.  Today the quaint riverfront city with Victorian charm is home to more than 600 businesses and 65 historical properties.

The Petaluma River has always played an important role in the greater area and at all times of settlement, from Petaluma Native Americans, to Spanish Explorers and Mexican vaqueros, to the farming communities of the 19th century. Especially due to the agriculture of the region, at one time, it was the third busiest commercial waterway in California. Produce, people, and products were transported between the northern counties and San Francisco, making Petaluma not only the largest, but also the wealthiest town in Sonoma, Marin and Mendocino counties. Annual events include the Butter & Egg Days Parade, Victorian Holiday events, Semi-Annual Antique Faires, the Great Petaluma Quilt Show and the Arts & Garden Festival.

Petaluma is featured prominently along the California Cheese trail, with several creameries to purview both in and around Petaluma. The annual Gravenstein Apple Fair is hosted by Sonoma County Farm Trails and has a long and rich history in Sonoma County. Sebastopol staged its first Apple Show in 1910 on Main Street in a tent across from the Petaluma and Santa Rosa Railway Depot. This small event celebrating the tart but sweet apple called the Gravenstein became an annual bash occurring every August, focused on showcasing apples and apple products during the peak of their season.

Petaluma is also located in the greater Northern California wine country, featuring plenty of established vineyards without the crowds commonly found in neighboring Sonoma and Napa, including Keller Estate Winery, Adobe Road Winery, Kastania Winery, McEvoy Ranch, and Azari Winery, among others.
